Julie Lea is the Founder and CEO of the Mystic Krewe of Nyx, the largest parading organization in Mardi Gras history. She is also the Founder and CEO of the Krewe of Pandora and the Nola Nyxettes. With a long history in supervisory/leadership roles and a proven ability to found successful organizations from the ground up, Julie is dedicated to creating positive impacts of a niche within her community.
Julie’s leadership experience has transcended from her previous law enforcement experience into leading three non-profit organizations. Dedicating her focus to offer women the opportunities of belonging to a sisterhood, while enjoying time for themselves is where Julie thrives.
The founding of the largest women’s organization in New Orleans started with a simple idea: Julie Lea was looking for something fun to do with her girlfriends that was different. All other all-female krewes at that time were full, and were not accepting new members. So she decided to pave a new path of her own and open up an opportunity for ladies in the city who were also looking to ride in a parade.
Julie Lea spent a lot of time fighting through political red tape and being told “no” more times she could count. However, Julie knew that her hard work and perseverance would eventually pay off, and eventually the City Council awarded the krewe their parade permit just in the nick of time for them to roll in the 2012 Mardi Gras Season. It was the first new parade awarded a permit by the city of New Orleans in over 10 years.
Since that time, the Mystic Krewe of Nyx has steadily grown its impact as a mainstay not just in the parade, but in the community. In 2013, Julie Lea extended the sisterhood of the Krewe of Nyx by overseeing the formation of the Nola Nyxettes, the first dancing troupe born out of a Mardi Gras Krewe. In 2015, Julie launched The Krewe of Pandora, the Mystic Krewe of Nyx’s “sister krewe” in Jefferson Parish. Most recently, in 2018, the Mystic Krewe of Nyx earned the honor of being the biggest parading krewe in history — serving as a huge win for the group, and meeting a personal goal of Julie’s from day one.
